Schools and Education

Nursery - Children under 5 years old

Education for children under the age of 5 is not compulsory.  The local authority Family Information service can help you finding a nursery placement:  www.westsussex.gov.uk/education-children-and-families/childcare-and-early-education/

Primary and secondary school - Children aged 5 - 16 years

Education is free and compulsory from 5 years to 16 years. By law your children must attend school – we will help to arrange this. See what schools are in your area: www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/education/

The school year starts in September and ends in July of the following year.

Primary schools are for children aged 4 to 10 and your child should be able to start school in the September following their 4th birthday.  

Secondary Schools are for children aged 11 to 16 with some having places up to the age of 18.

Further education - people aged 16 to 18/19 years

16-18 year olds must be in either full-time education at college or work with an educational component.  

Higher education - people aged 18 years old +

Higher Education is taught at universities and individuals will usually begin applying between the ages of 17 and 18. Typically students can study for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Adult education

Adult education is available and we can help you to access this.

Colleges and adult education services may offer full and part-time adult learning opportunities
