It is important to learn English and improve your language skills to become fluent in English if you can. We can provide ways to join a class to learn English or sometimes provide direct teaching to you and your family. Until you can speak English, you may need help with translation and we can often help with this or make you aware of someone who can help.

Learn English

Learning English is essential to settle well into life in Worthing. We run a range of classes and opportunities to help you learn English, and there are other providers too in the town or online who could also help you. We’ve listed them here:

English class in person 

English classes on Wednesdays 1-2.30pm delivered by Worthing 4 Refugees at Maybridge Community Church, 77 The Strand, Worthing, BN12 6DR.  Free for refugees and asylum seekers.  £1.50 for others.  No need to book in advance; just turn up. Starts May 1st 2024.

In person lessons just for you

Worthing 4 Refugees charity has volunteer trained ESOL teachers who can teach you on your own or with a friend either in your home or in a convenient location (could be a library or coffee shop for example).  Email info@worthing4refugees.org.uk if you would like us to match a teacher with you.

ESOL classes delivered by TWIN in Worthing.  Courses are 7 weeks long; to apply email: sussex@twingroup.org

Lessons held at Quakers Meeting House 34 Mill road BN11 5DR on Mondays 7pm – 9pm. Small groups, refreshments provided. To join, contact warden@worthingquakers.org.uk. Classes currently cost £5 per session, but may become free later.

The local college, Northbrook, have accredited ESOL classes at their college in Brighton. (You can easily get a train to Brighton).  You need to complete an online form: ESOL application form (google.com)

The local college, Worthing college, have accredited ESOL classes at their college in Broadwater, Worthing.  You need to enrol for September, and be available to study 4 days a week for 9 months.

Other Online English courses

  • Only for Ukrainians: STEP programme for learning English and finding work for Ukrainians in the UK from World Jewish Relief, the British Council and the UK Government.  Duration: 12 weeks. The aim is to help Ukrainians find meaningful work in the UK (including for those interested in self-employment) and improve their English. The programme is funded by the UK government and is FREE for all participants. Eligibility requirements: Ukrainians over the age of 18 who have arrived in the UK under one of the Ukrainian schemes. You can join the programme if you are unemployed or if you are already employed but hope to move to a more suitable job.  Enrolment is on an ongoing basis and there is no deadline for registration.   • Sam’s School of English are offering free 12 week online English courses.  You need to register online and take a test online: Please fill in this form and take our level test. (google.com)  If you need help completing the online form, email info@worthing4refugees.org.uk and one of our volunteers will help you.
  • The library have launched a new online resource for language learning.  Transparent Language Online is available for free for anyone with a West Sussex library card. With over 110 languages to choose from (including courses for learning English), you can learn at home, in the library, or on the go. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities will help you learn the words and phrases needed to communicate effectively in a foreign language.

English Practice

A men’s English practice group meets every Sunday from 5-6 in the church hall behind St. Matthew’s Church in Tarring Road.  You would be welcome to join us to spend an hour socialising over a tea or coffee.  For ladies we can arrange visits to a local café with an English speaking lady during the school day or perhaps in the evening.  For more information please email philliprugg@fastmail.fm

Worthing Refugees Cuppa and Chat

An informal weekly meet up for local refugees to interact and share experiences/tips while engaging in communicative activities in English. 2-3pm every Thursday at CREW, 8/9 South Street, Worthing, BN11 3AL.  This will be a great opportunity to meet others and practice chatting in English (even if you are a beginner).
