It is important to learn English and improve your language skills to become fluent in English if you can. We can provide ways to join a class to learn English or sometimes provide direct teaching to you and your family. Until you can speak English, you may need help with translation and we can often help with this or make you aware of someone who can help.

Learning English is essential to settle well into life in Worthing. We run a range of classes and opportunities to help you learn English, and there are other providers too in the town or online who could also help you. We’ve listed them here:

Easy access classes

English class in person
English classes on Wednesdays 1-2.30pm delivered by Worthing 4 Refugees at Maybridge Community Church, 77 The Strand,
Worthing, BN12 6DR. Free for refugees and asylum seekers. £1.50 for others. No need to book in advance; just turn up.

English class in person
Clifton Community Church, Clifton Road, Worthing, BN11 4DP Mondays. 9.30-11am beginner’s class; 1-2.30pm pre-
intermediate class. To book your place please call or text Matt on 07359265594 or call in at Wing Wah, Clifton Road. Free for
refugees; £1.50 for others.

English class in person
Beginner English Classes on Thursdays 10am-12 noon at 1st floor Guildbourne Centre, Worthing, BN11 1LZ. Free. No need to

Accredited classes

English class in person
ESOL classes delivered by TWIN in Worthing. Courses are 7 weeks long; to apply email: sussex@twingroup.org
Courses are available at Entry Level 1 – Entry Level 3. Depending on your ESOL assessment, you will be allocated a morning or

Worthing college, have accredited ESOL classes at their college site in Broadwater, Worthing.

English classes in person at Brighton
The local college, Northbrook, have accredited ESOL classes at their college in Brighton. (You can easily get a train to Brighton).
You need to complete an online form: ESOL application form (google.com)
If you need help completing the online form, email info@worthing4refugees.org.uk and one of our volunteers will help you.

In person lessons just for you

If you are not able to find a suitable class, Worthing 4 Refugees charity has volunteer trained ESOL teachers who can teach you
on your own or with a friend either in your home or in a convenient location (could be a library or coffee shop for example).

Other Online English courses
● The library have an online resource for language learning. Transparent Language Online for Libraries
is available for free for anyone with a West Sussex library card. With over 110 languages to choose
from (including courses for learning English), you can learn at home, in the library, or on the go.
Reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities will help you learn the words and phrases needed
to communicate effectively in a foreign language.
